Latin American Music and Tango Style Contest
Latin American Music and Tango Style Contest
On Sunday, March 15, 2009, at 3:00pm, in Ives Concert Hall at Western Connecticut State University (mid-town campus), Music Director Ariel Rudiakov will conduct the Danbury Symphony Orchestra in a program entitled “Music of the Americas.” The concert will feature the sounds of Latin America including The Latin American Symphonette by Morton Gould, Sensemaya by Revueltas, El Salon Mexico by Copland, and Sones de Mariachi by Galinda. This rhythmically intense performance will also showcase members of the Western Connecticut State University Percussion Program.
To further entice our audience, this concert will include a Tango-style dance contest. Couples will dance (onstage) to Blue Tango by Leroy Anderson. This is an opportunity for tango dancers to perform for a large audience with a live symphony orchestra (and to showcase our area’s talented dancers and local dance studios). One couple will be chosen to receive two complimentary tickets to the Danbury Music Centre’s gala ball, Evening in Vienna, to take place on Friday, March 27th at 8pm in the Grand Hotel Ballroom of the Danbury Sheraton Plaza Hotel and Conference Center.
Tango adjudicators will include Arthur Fredric, Lisa Denton, and other prominent members of the local dance community. The prize-winners will be announced at the conclusion of the concert.
The performance and contest will take place at Ives Concert Hall located in White Hall on the corner of Fifth Avenue and White Street at the mid-town campus of Western Connecticut State University.
All dancers participating in the exhibition must pre-register to reserve floor space and to receive guidelines by calling the Danbury Music Centre, at 203-748-1716, or email <dmc1935@snet.net>.
This concert is free thanks to Fred and Joan Weisman who have provided major funding for the performance and to MetLife for providing funding for the music.
